One can only hope that Steve Balsamo is given another chance to work with Eric Woolfson (or Alan Parsons, for that matter). Having heard him sing "Gethsemane" from Jesus Christ Superstar, and been overwhelmed by his powerful voice, I thought nothing could top that. Enter "Immortal" from "Poe". This may be a tough and contentious call, but this song may be the greatest single Parsons/Woolfson moment - group or solo. For sheer emotion controlled by his vocal range, this song A) makes me want to cry, and b) become a singer, both exceptional measures of a song. The we have "Wing Of Eagles" which Steve carries with a ruthless catchiness, "Somewhere In The Audience" which tears the heart and makes a great companion piece to "Immortal", and the simple yet heartfelt "Tiny Star". On top of this there is the haunting, nay tortured, "Pit and the Pendulum" which showcases Steve's showstopping ability. I know I can chase his solo works, or those of his band, any time I wish. But it is the fusion of his voice, the Woolfson lyrics and music and the amazing musicianship which keeps me hoping for more. One day, I hope!
